A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the rapidity and management of the country's flagship public works projects.
The crash occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a line developed to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate what caused this tragedy,” affirmed the national leader.
The president reported that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The official stated plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Major Initiative of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the former leader, whose term finished the previous year. This rail line was a hallmark of his government's economic goals for the southern region.
Another ambitious train initiative from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to stimulate the economic fortunes of a relatively less developed part of the country.
Building Management and Risks Apprehensions
The construction of both rail lines was managed by the army, marking a notable growth of its duties in public works. They were built at an fast-tracked pace, surpassing forecasts to be partially inaugurated before the end of that presidency.
However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously sparked significant concerns over safety standards.
- Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an prior crash this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-lethal derailments.
Appeals for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a primary political opposition demanded an immediate suspension in the construction and operation of all such projects.
This stoppage was requested until the completion of a full technical review. The party emphasized that the loss of life "calls for prompt explanations."
In reply, the president maintained that the train had been operating in complete compliance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the development and operation of these vital undertakings.
