Donald Trump along with Colombia's president have turned up the tone of their war of words, increasing tensions bilaterally following US forces targeted Venezuela to remove the leader of Venezuela Nicolás Maduro from his position.
"He operates drug factories and cocaine factories and his time is running out," the US president stated.
Escalating Threats and Claims
Speaking to the press on Sunday, the American leader threatened comparable use of force against Colombia, stating Colombia faces serious problems and led by an unwell individual who enjoys creating the drug and distributing it to America."
Although Colombia remains the globe's biggest source of the narcotic, there is no evidence implicating Gustavo Petro, who was elected in 2022, is personally tied to the business.
A Deteriorating Relationship
The country has long been a key ally of the US in the campaign combating drug cartels and benefited from cross-party backing in the US capital, yet ties have worsened markedly since Trump assumed the presidency.
Colombia’s drug trade is predominantly run by criminal organizations like the Golf Clan, another leftist insurgency and dissident factions of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (Farc), most of its former fighters demobilised following a historic peace agreement.
The President's Strong Response
Upon being questioned whether a military operation similar to Venezuela was a possibility regarding Colombia, Trump said: "I like the sound of that from my perspective."
The Colombian leader, an ex-guerrilla fighter who disarmed in the 1990s, categorically refuted Trump's claims. "I am neither illegitimate nor am I involved in narcotics," he declared.
"He comments uninformed. Stop slandering me," he wrote online.
"If they [the US] bomb civilians, they will turn into a multitude of fighters in the mountains. And if they detain me, whom a significant portion of the population holds in high esteem, they will unleash the fierce spirit of the nation," he admonished.
From Fighter to Leader
He passed part of his youth belonging in the left-wing M-19 insurgent movement but is not believed that he never took part in armed clashes. After demobilizing, he took part in drafting the constitutional rewrite in 1991 and later became a prominent senator. He served as mayor of the capital city prior to his election the presidency.
"I pledged to abstain from using arms again ... but in defense of my country I will take up weapons once more," he vowed.
Heightened Measures along with Widespread Rejection
The Colombian defence minister announced that the national leader's security detail had been reinforced.
Several members of Colombia’s right wing opposition have expressed support with Trump's stance, however, leaders spanning the ideological divide have denounced the threats of American military action targeting Colombia.
Political and Financial Strains
Washington revoked his travel authorization following he called on US troops to disobey orders that violate law. Later, in October, the US enacted financial sanctions targeting Petro, his spouse and various associates.
Concurrently while America bolstered its military presence in the Caribbean and targeting alleged narcotics traffickers against Venezuela’s Maduro, US forces executed operations on boats off the Pacific coast adjacent to Colombia.
